A murder in a tiny Dartmoor village in the dead of winter sets the stage for this classic Christie whodunit. Several had a motive, few had an opportunity. The most likely suspect is quickly imprisoned, but his fiance remains unsatisfied with the law's conclusions. Determined to clear James Pearson's name, Emily Trefusis sets off with intrepid newspaper reporter Charles Enderby to seek out the circumstances of Major Treveylan's murder. As with all of Christie's books, we get plenty of atmosphere as the plot unfolds in the Dartmoor countryside. Here we see the deepest depths of winter. This novel has all of the elements of a juicy, quick read. The plot and suspense build as we follow Emily on her quest for answers. This is classic Christie- a bit of brain-fluff, for sure, but engaging and well-written.

The Sittaford Mystery by Dame Agatha Christie (1890-1976) was published in London in 1931. It is one of those Christie novels without the services of Miss Marple or Detective Hercule Poirot on duty to solve mystery. The Plot:" Mrs Willett a recent émigré to England from her home in South Africa holds a party at Sittaford House. Present are her daughter Violet and four guests. A séance is held and a turning table spells out a spooky message reading, ';Trevelyan Dead-Murder.": Major Burnaby an acquaintance of Captain Trevelyan calls the police and the doctor. They arrive at the Trevelyan estate called Hazelmoor. There they find the dead Trevelyan. The retired murder victim has been bludgeoned to death with a sandbag used to keep out winter drafts. All of this occurs during a terrific snowstorm that has shut down travel in the gloomy Dartmoor region of Great Britain. The police arrest Jim Pearson the nephew of the murder victim. Jim';s fiancée is beautiful and brainy Emily Trefusis. Emily along with newspaper reporter Charles Enderby put on their thinking caps to solve the mystery. Emily is a fascinating woman reminding this reader of an older version of America s Nancy Drew. The plot is complex with many characters and there pasts to sort out in typical Christie fashion. However, the explanation of the murder is simple and easily understood. This is one of the lesser known Christie novels but I found it to be a page turner. An excellent introduction to the delights of Agatha Christie!

My Mystery Book Club reads one play per year. Since last month we recognized Agatha Christie's birthday (on September 15th), we decided that "The Mousetrap" would be our perfect October book pick.Oh, what fun, to be reading that wondrous play which has had over 25,000 performances in its continuous run since its 1952 opening in London's West End. I had seen the play twice (in London and here in the U.S.), and I was once again charmed by all things typical-Christie. Yes, there was a strange group of potential suspects--eccentric characters who certainly looked suspicious. Even in reading the play, the book club members enjoyed the wry bits of humor--fun lines poking up here and there in fine British style. There is the requisite "sin from the past" that drives the story. And of course--there are red herrings galore! The "star" of the scenes (when I saw it on stage) was the huge window in the center rear of the stage. It works the same way in the play as I read it. We know the storm is out there. The window allows us to "see" the snow storm begin, with its snowy buildup on the windows--and we know that now everyone is isolated in the Manor House, and there is a murderer about!"The Mousetrap" has its long history, and the most amazing thing is how well the mystery still works, after all these decades. When I read the book, I could see how an expert does it right. Agatha Christie is quite the master, letting the reader (or viewer) see only what she wants us to see.Cheers to marvelous Dame Agatha! Our next selection is going to "Witness for the Prosecution." But of course, I cannot recommend "The Mousetrap" enough--for both her fans and for those who are yet to make her acquaintance. Read and enjoy this clever mystery as a rare example of a true whodunit--but with no offensive dialog or sex that seems almost too rampant these days!
