Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud was born in Purmerend, Holland, in 1890. Educated at the Arts and Crafts School in Amsterdam and at the Technical University in Delft, he worked for Theodor Fischer in Munich before settling in Leiden.~An original member of De Stijl, Oud eventually left the group due to philosophical disagreements. In 1918 he became Municipal Housing Architect for Rotterdam. In 1933 he established his own practice. As a young socialist, Oud stimulated an international and regional trend toward functionalism. He wrote magazine articles, acted as a correspondent for Soviet architectural journals, and contributed a book on Dutch architecture to the Bauhausbucher series. Oud's best-known works are for housing schemes in expanding areas. During and after World War II he became involved in larger commercial projects, but these never achieved the clarity of his early housing. Considered a pioneer of Dutch Functionalist architecture, Oud died in Wassenaar, Holland, in 1963.

About the Author

John Hull is the Maple Financial Professor of Derivatives and Risk Management at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. He is an internationally recognized authority on derivatives and risk management with many publications in this area. His work has an applied focus. In 1999 he was voted Financial Engineer of the Year by the International Association of Financial Engineers. This is perhaps the standard textbook for options theory. Entire college courses are taught based on just a few chapters.It contains all of the basic options and futures theory you'd need. It won't teach you to trade but you can learn all of the basic theory of what options are and how they work.

What a great book I should read this to my university in my options and Futures class which has proved to be quite good for me to do my CFA in the future

This book is incredible in the technical explanation of options, but it is not a book you pick up and read lightly and understand.

This book is a great primer for teaching you the basics of futures and options. I would recommend it to anyone serious about studying this subject.

Clear presentation of derivative investments.

This book does a great job at clearly teaching the basics of forwards/futures and options markets. While there are a handful of summary questions at the end of each chapter that have answers in the back of the book, the overwhelming majority of answers to the end of chapter practice problems are not. In order to use this book properly and get the most out of it, the study guide is a necessity. Other than that, it's a great textbook.

By games I mean the fact that the answers to about a third of the questions are found in a solutions manual that, last time I looked (in early Sept '07), was unavailable for purchase. The answers to another third of the questions are not to be found anywhere. The answers to the last third of the questions are in the book--but these questions are not very interesting or challenging. Why must we play this game? Why not just put all the answers in the back of the book? (I know, I know: it's all about the money, etc. But still . . .)As for the content of the book, I'm told that this isn't Hull's authoritative book (that would be 'Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives'). I feel like a sucker for having bought it. Is it good to make your customer's feel like suckers, Mr. Hull?

This book is perfect, like introduction to all derivatives. It is a little hard written, but solution manual is also available for $35. However, if you want to focus more on Options, I recommend another book from same author.

I took a class with Dr. Andrew P. Sage (the editor of this book) at George Mason University focusing on Systems Engineering, where this book is required. I also took a doctoral qualifying exam with this book in the reading list.To start, the first edition of this book did a very amicable job of describing Structured Systems Analysis & Design (SSAD), while this version tried to cram in Object-Oriented Systems Analysis & Design (OOSAD) in a few of the chapters. IDEF0 (a SSAD diagram) is still used in many of these chapters right along the SysML (OOSAD diagramming) stuff.While SSAD is outdated, the OOSAD material in this book is simply tacked on and not very useful when explained in conjunction with SSAD. Furthermore, it makes both approaches more difficult to understand when presented without a clear divider between the two. This edition is unfortunately an attempt to make an old book relevant for modern systems engineering - a classic "attach a few paragraphs and resell it" scenario.If you need this book for class, I would recommend picking up the cheaper first edition, then getting yourself a good SysML or UML book (A Practical Guide to SysML by Friedenthal is LEAGUES better than this book) which will give you all you need to learn both approaches.

This is easily the worst engineering textbook I've ever had to purchase.The author is long-winded and extremely difficult to follow. He is repetitive and verbose..."a thousand words paint a picture" seems to be his mantra. Much of the discussion seems circular and is otherwise poorly sequenced. There are few examples, and the few that exist are poor. The figures and diagrams do little to improve the text, unfortunately.Lots of definitions are provided...then never used again.There are numerous mistakes throughout the text, which is disappointing for a 2nd edition.Taken together, this is a very difficult read. I frequently found myself asking, "What's the point of this topic?" on more than one chapter...Definitely a book I would not recommend. There must be better alternatives available.

An average system engineering design book. The book is well structured as a reference book and has great SE tools which can help in the design and development process. The tools can be applied best in determining optimal design referencing well understood specifications which were developed from solid requirements. The book tends to over complicate simple concepts and conversely simplify complex topics.Examples of explained tools are:1. Sequence Diagrams2. Input/Output Diagrams (phase based)3. Trade studies

I bought this text to help study for oral and written exams in a PhD program. I found that this text has good nuggets of information but I've not fully appreciated it as a reference until lately. Initially, when being introduced to SE I found that the text was less useful. Now I turn to it occasionally and each time I do I find a new piece of information that I did not previously understand.This is a good text to help understand an SE process conceptually. It's a bit harder to use it as a practical guide.

Well written, clearly articulated processes and procedures makes this book suitable for learners and practitioners. Buy it.

As advertised and reviewed. This is not easy to read casual. It helps to have a sequence from a class. Example: My class read Chapters 1-2, then went directly to Chapter 6.
